9 March 2000

We've got an interesting situation on our hands.  For the past week or so, I've been aware of something going on with Monica buying the Arellano family's chickens.  I didn't know any details until this morning.  Monica showed up at our house this morning to ask us to help her build her house out in Iberan, an outer barangay (closest English word is probably subdivision) of Salcedo.  We agreed, because we needed a CSP (Community Service Project) for tomorrow morning.  Then she started bad-mouthing Sister Arellano.  Apparently, yesterday while Monica was gone, Sister Arellano took her hen back because she had never received money for it, plus Monica had taken their rooster without letting them know, and she sold it.  Monica didn't tell us everything.  We took her out to Bungtod and had her wait at the Daep's house while we went to Sister Arellano and listened to her side of the story.  Then we got them together and the two of them very civilly discussed the problem.  They came to the conclusion that it was a misunderstanding about the rooster, and Lorna Celis' fault about the unpaid-for hen.  Monica claims to have left the money with Lorna, but the money never got to the Arellanos.  I don't believe that now, but I wasn't sure this morning.  They also came to an agreement wherein Monica would buy back the rooster from her niece and give it back to Sister Arellano, who would in turn give the hen back.  We would talk with Lorna some other time.  Elder Culbertson and I left thinking it was resolved for the moment.

We went to see Monica at 5:00 this afternoon.  She told us that everything was fine.  We visited her and solidified our plans for tomorrow.

We taught Sally the fifth discussion next.  As we were finishing up, Yolanda came to the window and told us to drop by her house after we were done.  So, after we were done with Sally, we went to see what Yolanda wanted.  She sat us down and closed the door and windows, (her sons were there) and asked us if we were really going to Iberan with Monica.  We said yes.  She asked if anyone else was coming.  We said Roguel, Monica's son.  She asked if anyone else was.  We said no.  She was very concerned about that.  She doesn't want us to go because it's dangerous.  She doesn't trust Monica, who has a history of mental instability.  She said that Monica and Sister Arellano had been arguing.  Monica attacked Sister Arellano, cutting her leg.  She called Monica dishonest and a little crazy, and she also said Roguel isn't trustworthy.  She seems afraid of her.  the way Monica has been acting lately has me on guard, too.  We're not sure what to do now.  We're going to pray about it, sleep on it, and see what happens in the morning.
