Christmas Conference (Waray-Waray half of the mission) |
Anyway. The sleeping arrangements were interesting. Elder Bassi and I slept in a single bed together. He snores and talks in his sleep, but I was so tired that I slept great anyway.
I just remembered something that Elder Ranck and I talked about. I asked him how Nilda was. He said she's okay now. Apparently, she has an ulcer. It was acting up that last time we saw her.
There was breakfast Tuesday morning, followed by a testimony meeting and a final message by President Dela Vega. It was nice. Your basic testimony meeting.
After the testimony meeting, I needed to get my toe taken care of. Elder McIver wasn't around to take us to the hospital, so Elder Hackett told us to wait for him at the office. So we hung around the office. Elder McIver showed up at noon. He said that everyone was out to lunch at the hospital, so we had to wait longer. We went to Shakey's while we waited. When we got back to the office, Elder McIver had to take some elders to the terminal, so we hung out with the office staff. Elders Nanol and Brown showed up from Mahaplag while we waited. Elder Brown has been having problems with his stomach and needed to go to a doctor, so when Elder McIver was free, he took Elder Brown and I to the hospital. Dr. Carpio did the usual injection in the arm, followed by the local on the toe. The infection, however, was pretty bad, so the anesthetic didn't have much effect. The actual removal of the ingrown wasn't all that bad, but when he started removing the bad portion of the nail bed, I couldn't take it. He had to stop because I was in too much pain. He told me to come back in January so he can check on it. While I was recovering (the injection in the arm makes me very dizzy), he started asking me about diabetes for some reason. "Are you a diabetic?" he asked. "No," I said. "Is there a history of diabetes in your family?" he asked. I told him about the many diabetics in my family. "When was the last time you had your blood/sugar tested?" About two years ago. He told me that I should get it checked again as soon as the infection in my toe is gone. I better not be a diabetic already.
Elder Wetenkamp and I started home around 5:30. It was terrible. For one thing, I still felt funny from the drug. The bus was overcrowded. I was sitting in the middle of the back bench, which is the worst seat on the bus. Most of the windows were closed, so it was hot. Everybody was smoking. The road sucks. I was so tired that I couldn't keep my eyes open, but I didn't sleep at all because of my discomfort. We got to Borongan at 10:30, where we crashed at the elders' apartment on mattresses on the floor. The next morning, we caught the 7:00 ride to Guiuan. It sucked, too.
We had a cool CSP (Community Service Project) this morning. Last week, we met some people who were building a nice, native-style restaurant right on the seashore (west coast where there aren't any waves). The person in charge is a cool woman in her mid-20s named Ethell. This morning, we went over and helped them. We sanded the bar so they could varnish it, and we also did a little bit of painting. The place opens on Saturday. We're excited about it, because it sounds like it'll be a cool place. Ethell and her family are cool, too.
