That was definitely the worst birthday of my life. Elder Baculio and I left Borongan at 4:00 in the morning of the 20th to go to Tacloban. I went for my toe, Baculio went for his cough. Elder Mulholland couldn't come with us to the doctor because he had to be at the new missionaries' orientation. He told me to use my working fun to pay for expenses. So Baculio and I went to the hospital. We kept running around between our two doctors, which kind of stressed me out. I found out that the toenail surgery would be too expensive for my working fund to cover, so we went back to the office. Mulholland wasn't there, but Elder Roberts tracked him down for me. We arranged to meet him at the hospital. Sutton and Roberts took us back there, and we met up with Mulholland and Fautimau, who charged the bill to the Church's account and left. Sutton, Roberts, and Baculio stuck around to watch. It was pretty impressive, too. I didn't feel a thing except for the injections in the toe. Dr. Carpio dug really deep and took out a lot of my nail, more than he ever had before. And then he got out the cauterizing machine and burned the nail bed in the hopes that it won't grow back. It really stunk. I looked at my toe just before he bandaged it so I wouldn't be surprised when I changed it. There are two gaping holes in my toe. It still hasn't quite stopped bleeding. After the local wore off, I was in a lot of pain. It was gone by the next day, though.
I saw Elder Anderson. He was being transferred from Tolosa to Mayorga. He was present at my 21st birthday, too. There are elders in Albuera again, by the way. I saw Elders Jones and Wetenkamp, too. Jones is training again. Wetenkamp is transferred to Kananga to be a zone leader. I really enjoyed seeing them. Jones is my favourite zone leader, and Wetenkamp is my favourite companion.
Tuesday the 21st was an awful day. We did a bunch of running around in the morning buying Elder Baculio's expensive medicine. It greatly depleted the working fund, so I had to go back to the office to talk to Elder Maganito, the financial secretary. But there was a line, so I had to wait. When I finally got to see him, he liquidated me. We'll get more working fund in the bank today.
Baculio and I ended up getting on an air con van at 4:00. They made us pay up front, which isn't unusual. We got to San Juanico, about 20 minutes out of Tacloban, and the rear wheel just fell off. I wasn't very impressed. After an hour of sitting on the side of the road, they finally tentatively fixed the wheel and took us back to Tacloban. Naturally, we asked for our money back. But the owner, the guy with the money, wasn't there. They tried to persuade us to just ride the other van that left at 2:00 am, but that was out of the question. We just arranged to come back and get our money the next morning. We spent the night in the office staff apartment.
We got our money back Wednesday morning and caught a bus at 9:00. Flat tire in Taft. I was burned out and depressed when I got back to Borongan yesterday. I just don't have any luck when I travel.
