28 May 2000

I declared a holiday yesterday.  I called it "Tacloban District Trunky Day."  Some interesting splits were necessary, and it ended up with Elder Marciano going to Sogod with Elder Maganito, Elder Hunt going to San Juanico with the Samoans in the office to take pictures of 10,000 chickens, and me going with Werner, Richens, and Fernandez to Branch 2's activity in San Jose.  The activity was fun.  There was really good food, volleyball and soccer with daragas (young single women) and other people, and good company.  We were right next to the airport, and once an airplane flew over us, only about 30 feet above us (that distance might not be accurate.  I'm terrible at judging height).  Werner screamed like on Wayne's World, I waved four and a half fingers, Richens waved eight fingers, and Hunt and Fautimau said "Two weeks!  Two weeks!"  We got to the apartment around 3:30.  Elder Marciano showed up soon afterwards.  We were all beat, so we took naps.

6:00 rolled around, and we went to a member's house for their daughter's 18th birthday party.  They weren't ready yet, so were went to Country Fresh for a snack.  We got talking to Gloria, the nice lady who runs the place with her French/American husband.  She said they're closing down because people who own the land are foreclosing on them.  NOOOOO!!!  It's a sad time for missionaries.  What's next?  Shakey's?

So at 7:00, we show up at the birthday party.  It's daraga city.  They were dressed nice, too.  They fed us well, and we left before they all started dancing.

A member in Branch 2 died yesterday morning of an asthma attack.  It was Brother Siscero.  It surprised everybody.  We went to a little memorial for him this evening.  It was nice.  Nothing Catholic about it.
