25 December 1999

Christmas in the Philippines.  This will be my only one.  I'm kind of glad.  Don't get me wrong, it was fun and all.  It did, however, have some downsides, and it was nothing compared to Christmas at home with my family. Elder Wetenkamp and I came here to Borongan yesterday afternoon.  We arrived at around 5:30.  We hung out with the elders of our zone (minus the zone leaders; they were off getting our support) all evening.  Some members brought us some food: chicken, rice, and cake.  It was good stuff.  The zone leaders showed up at around 9:30 or 10:00, and we all played some more.  We played Gadianton Robbers, Uno, and we wrestled.  We didn't go to sleep until 4:30 in the morning.

I woke up at 7:00 and waited for Mum and Dad to call.  At 9:00, I figured that something was up, because they hadn't called me yet.  So I called them collect.  They hadn't been able to get through.  I had a very nice talk with the family.  Everybody but the Quists were there.  They all seem to be doing well.  Emily sounds older.  Everyone else sounds the same.  Rob sounded very Canadian.  I've been away for too long.  I sound different, apparently.  I guess I've matured, plus I've been exposed to nothing but American and Filipino accents for the past 14 months.

It's been raining all day.  That doesn't keep people from coming to our door and asking for presents.  They aren't even singing, they just come to the door and ask for stuff.  This isn't Halloween, it's Christmas.
