25 August 2000

We'll have 14 baptisms tomorrow.  An interesting occurrence happened yesterday while we were getting everybody's information for the baptismal record.  I asked Bonifacio and Marina Amistoso where they go married.  They kind of chuckled.  Turns out that, over the 29 years of living together, the whole "marriage" thing never happened.  It's actually quite a common thing in this bass-ackwards country.  In fact, I just realized something like this happened last August 24 in Almeria.  Anyway, we talked to President and Sister Calo about it, and we decided that President would take them to the mayor this morning and get them married legally.  Then Elder Harline and I went back to the middle-aged couple, and I, a 22-year-old foreigner who just preaches, said, "You're getting married tomorrow morning."  Afterwards, the entire situation just struck me funny.  So now they're married and getting baptized tomorrow.

One of the baptisms, Susana Labatiao, isn't going through.  She's not married to her husband.  The thing is, her husband ran off to Sta. Rita, Samar, about a month ago.  Nobody knows if or when he's coming back.  The ZLs phoned the APs, who in turn asked President Dela Vega, who informed us to wait, just in case the husband returns and wants to do grown up things with her.  It's too bad.  She really wants to get baptized.  I'm sure she will someday, it just won't be tomorrow.
